Day 1: Arrival – Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International airport. Meet Massawe Adventures at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Moshi Lodge. Overnight Massawe Adventure Lodge.
Day 2: Local Tour
After breakfast, you will be met by Massawe Adventures staff with a private vehicle and taken to the beautiful Materuni waterfalls. You will then explore the indigenous Chagga culture and village. Followed by a coffee production tour. Afterwards, you will be driven back to the Moshi Lodge. Overnight Massawe Adventure Lodge.
Day 3:
Be met by your head guide and drive to the Machame gate (about 45min.). After registration, start climbing along a clear trail through the plantation and natural forest, thereafter a narrow forest path follows to the Machame huts (9,900ft). Approx 4-5 hours of walking today
Day 4:
Breakfast, then ascend through the forest, and steep ridges passing through heather and open moorlands, finally crossing a large gorge to Shira huts. (12,600ft). Approx 4-5 hours of walking today.
Day 5:
Today is mostly about letting you explore the plateau and visiting the giant lava towers of the Shira Cathedral. The Shira Plateau used to be a massive crater before an eruption caused the volcano to collapse leaving some great scenery. Enjoy walks during the day and return to the same campsite for the night.
Day 6:
After breakfast, we will ascend to Lava tower (15,180ft) with lunch on the way. Then descend slowly to Baranco campsite (12,850ft) for dinner and an overnight stay. Approx 5-7 hours of walking today.
Day 7:
After breakfast, we leave Baranco camp for Karanga hut (12930ft). We will pass through the last water drop at Karanga Valley on the way up. Arriving for lunch and dinner and the overnight stop. (approx 3- 5 hours walking).
Day 8:
After breakfast, we leave Karanga hut for Barafu hut (14,910ft). Spend a few hours sleeping at Barafu campsite before waking up to ascend the summit. Approx 4-5 hours of walking
Day 9: Summit day
Wake up at midnight, and after a small snack, start ascending to Uhuru Peak through the Stella point (18,640ft), then after reaching the summit, we will head down to Mweka camp. Approx 6-7 hours to Uhuru Peak and then another 4-5 hours to Mweka camp.
Day 10:
After breakfast, we will head down to Mweka gate with a packed lunch, and a waiting vehicle will take you back to Moshi. Approx 3-4 hours of walking today.
Day 11: Departure – Moshi
Optional exploration of the town/souvenir shopping trip, and other experiences are available depending on the client’s areas of interest. Massawe Adventures will ensure the client is transported to Kilimanjaro International airport in time for departure.
Additional Costs:
The Hiring of clothing, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, walking poles etc.
Tipping to your guides, cook and porters
The standard recommendation for this is USD$20 per day to the head guide, $15 per day to the assistant guide, $15 per day to the cook and $10 per day per porter. These costs are split between everyone doing the climb.
